SF Security Guards Picket Transamerica Pyramid

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / BCN) ― The Transamerica Pyramid was added Wednesday to the list of about 20 buildings where San Francisco security guards have picketed since Monday, according to the Service Employees International Union Local 24/7.

The union is asking for better wages, more training and adequate health benefits for the nearly 6,000 Bay Area security officers it represents, spokeswoman Gina Bowers said.

"What kind of future do we have in the city when people are working full time and they can't afford to live here?" Bowers asked.

Contract negotiations continued Wednesday afternoon at the Westin San Francisco Market Street. Meantime, striking guards, members of the community and a number of clergy took part in a prayer vigil in support of the strike at Front and Market streets.

"We are continuing to negotiate in good faith," said Guy Thomas, spokesman for the security companies, "as we progress toward a contract that is good for our employees and good for our clients."

Bowers said 100 officers were currently taking part in picketing, noting that the labor action was a strategic strike -- one that focused on key buildings instead of a walkout involving large numbers of guards.
