BART Expecting Record Traffic For Holiday

OAKLAND (BCN) ― Holiday travelers flocking to San Francisco International and Oakland International airports are expected to board Bay Area Rapid Transit trains in record-setting numbers this Thanksgiving Day weekend, BART officials announced Tuesday.

Officials expect 50,000 people to ride BART to and from SFO between today and Monday, which will mark an 8 percent increase from the same period in 2006.

An estimated 29,000 people, up 3 percent from 2006, are expected to ride the AirBART shuttle that runs between the Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART Station and the Oakland airport, according to BART officials.

BART officials attribute the anticipated increased number of passengers, which has grown steadily since service to SFO began in 2003, to the low cost and convenience of BART trains.

A 96 percent passenger on-time record, travel costs lower than a cab ride to the nearby airport, and long-term parking for riders on the way out of town are some of the conveniences offered by BART, according to officials.

BART doubled the number of parking spots usually available for long-term parking with 1,640 spaces available today through Monday, according to officials.

Passengers leaving from the East Bay stations, excluding the West Oakland, Union City, and Oakland Airport stops, can pay $5 each day in any BART parking lot for long-term parking with a permit.

Long-term parking at the Colma, South San Francisco, San Bruno and Millbrae stations will cost $6 each day with a permit, which can be purchased online at www.BART.gov/parking

Permits will not be sold at stations.
