Santa Clara County homeless shelters will remain open 24 hours a day through the weekend because of the storm system battering the Bay Area, county officials announced Friday afternoon.
No one will be turned away at the open shelters, which include the Gilroy National Guard Armory, 8490 Wren Ave., the Boccardo Reception Center in San Jose, 2011 Little Orchard St.
In Sunnyvale, the Presbyterian Church at 728 W. Fremont Ave. will be open until 6 a.m. Saturday. The Sunnyvale National Guard Armory at 620 E. Maude Ave. will open 6 a.m. Saturday and will remain open until Monday evening.
"We are pleased that the state has approved keeping the Gilroy and Sunnyvale armories open through Monday evening to ensure that thousands of unsheltered people in Santa Clara County will have protection from the severe storm," County Executive Pete Kutras said.
The storm has dumped more than 4 inches of rain on the Santa Clara Valley floor, according to Santa Clara Valley Water District spokeswoman Susan Siravo.
"We've captured 3,900 acre-feet of water in our 10 reservoirs. That's increased our reservoir capacity from 41 percent to 44 percent," Siravo said.
