A murder suspect from Marysville who was shot and killed by Santa Clara police on Sunday ignored officers' commands to drop his gun and made a sudden move that prompted several officers to fire at him, according to police.
Ian Sloan York, 21, was suspected of killing his 19-year-old girlfriend on Saturday, the day before he was spotted in Santa Clara.
York allegedly shot Kelly Roome in the chest and another man in the extremities, Maryville police said. Roome died and the man was treated at a hospital and released.
Maryville investigators alerted Santa Clara police that York had likely fled to area, and provided a description of him. York had recently moved Marysville from Indiana.
On Sunday around 11:30 a.m., a police officer in Santa Clara spotted a man matching York's description at Bowe Avenue and El Camino Real.
After seeing police, York reportedly fired on an officer and was wounded in return fire before fleeing to a wooded spot near Saratoga Creek, police said. Officers located him about an hour later.
Once sequestered near the creek, Sloan ignored multiple commands from officers to surrender, and remained perched near the creek bank, his 9mm handgun at his side, according to the version of events given by police.
Santa Clara police called in the Santa Clara County sheriff's special response team and the SWAT team from Sunnyvale. The specially trained officers spent "quite some time" trying to negotiate with York, Santa Clara police spokesman Lt. Phil Cooke said.
However, police said, York "suddenly made a deliberate move and grabbed his gun, which was pointed at officers."
Several officers fired at York, striking him multiple times and killing him.
On Wednesday evening, Santa Clara police identified the officers who fired on York. They are: Sgt. Steve Buress, a 19-year veteran of the department; Officer Tyson Shearer, a 10-year veteran; and officers Travis Niesen, Douglas Bell and Michael Horn, who have each been with the department for two years. Niesen was the officer who first encountered York, police said.
All of the officers have been placed on administrative leave, according to Cooke, which is standard procedure as police and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's office investigate the shooting.
Police detectives from Marysville visited Santa Clara earlier this week and continue to work with local police on the investigation, Cooke said.
