2 Arrested In San Mateo Mugging, Auto Theft
SAN MATEO (BCN) ―
San Mateo police arrested two men Monday in connection with an assault and vehicle theft carried out earlier that morning.
The victim and two friends left a party at a lounge in San Mateo around 1:45 a.m. and were walking to the victim's vehicle in the 200 block of North Claremont Street when a man approached them and asked about their jewelry, police said.
The men attempted to ignore the stranger, who then allegedly tried to pull a chain from the victim's neck. When he didn't succeed, the suspect punched the victim in the back of his head, police said.
The suspect then used an object to simulate a gun, and the victim and his friend ran, police said.
Keys to the victim's vehicle, which was parked nearby, fell from the victim's pocket, police said. The suspect and a friend who had watched the assault took the keys, located the vehicle and drove away.
San Mateo police broadcasted the vehicle description, and South San Francisco and Brisbane police located and stopped the vehicle on U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco.
Kevin Taft Miller, 38, a transient from the San Mateo area, and Keenan Jones, 41, of Redwood City, were arrested and booked into San Mateo County jail.
Miller was on active parole and arrested on suspicion of robbery, auto theft and a parole violation, police said. Jones was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and possession of a switchblade-type knife.
