San Jose Police Make Arrest In Weekend Slaying

SAN JOSE (BCN) ― Two people treated for stab wounds following a deadly party in San Jose this weekend are now being held in jail, one of them on suspicion of murder, San Jose police Officer Enrique Garcia said today.

Augustine Regalado, 27, of San Jose, was shot to death during a large fight between partygoers and uninvited guests early Saturday morning in the 400 block of South Seventh Street.

Michael Jason Orozco, 23, of San Jose, was stabbed in that same fight along with a 16-year-old boy, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile.

Police now believe that Orozco was the shooter and that gang rivalry could have been the motive.

"We're looking at the possibility of this being a gang-related homicide," Garcia said, adding that the follow-up investigation revealed that Orozco shot and killed Regalado in the fight.

Orozco and the 16-year-old were arrested Saturday at a local hospital where the boy was transported by paramedics and Orozco went to seek out treatment for his wounds. Regalado also died at that same hospital.

Garcia declined to say how police tied Orozco, originally thought to be a victim in the fight, to the killing, citing the ongoing investigation. Witnesses at the party, however, helped point police in the right direction, he said.

Police still do not know who stabbed Orozco and the 16-year-old boy, Garcia said, adding that nothing, however, indicates that Regalado did it.

He declined to say whether police had confiscated the gun used in the slaying.

The 16-year-old boy is not suspected of participating in the shooting but was booked into Juvenile Hall for a probation violation stemming from a gang association, Garcia said.

Orozco was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of murder.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police department's homicide unit at (408) 277-5283 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers at (408) 947-STOP.
