San Jose Mayor Won't Attend Tet Parade

SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― It could be considered the latest fallout from the "Little Saigon" controversy in San Jose. Mayor Chuck Reed will not be at the annual Vietnamese Tet Parade this weekend.

Mayor Reed said he is avoiding this Sunday's festivities out of concern for public safety.

"And I understand, from information that I've received, that there are people who are planning to create disruptions at the parade and I want to make sure that we minimize that opportunity," Reed explained.

There is speculation that the disruptions could come from those who support the idea of renaming a business district in the city Little Saigon.

They have been protesting the San Jose City Council's decision to name a stretch of Story Road the "Saigon Buisness District."

The threat of violence is being overstated, counters the emcee of the event.

"I don't see that at all and I think that's a scare tactic on the part of the mayor to try to discourage other people from attending," the emcee said. "And I think that is a very bad signal that he's sending."
