SF Police Shoot, Wound Woman In Mission Dolores

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS / BCN) ― A 60-year-old woman shot and wounded by a police officer in San Francisco's Mission Dolores neighborhood Thursday, according to police.

Sgt. Wilfred Williams said officers were called to an apartment at 1941 15th Street, between Dolores and Church streets, at 11:10 a.m. to assist a social worker with a woman who was making violent threats.

"When Officers arrived to assist the social worker, some type of altercation occurred inside of the apartment, and shots were fired," Williams stated.

The woman who had allegedly been making the threats was hit by the gunfire and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment, Williams said.

Williams said he did not know the woman's condition, nor whether she lived at that address.

Investigators were not saying if the woman was armed or if she threatened the police; however, none of the officers were injured.

Neighbors reported hearing four or five gunshots and saw the woman being loaded into an ambulance afterward.

"It's shocking, it is very shocking in this neighborhood, because we're all very peace-loving people around here," said one worried neighbor who saw the injured woman as she was rushed to the hospital.

Another woman who lives in the neighborhood said she was at a corner store when she heard the gunfire.

"I said, well, either it's a shootout or the police are flying to the donut shop."

A man who has lived around the corner from the shooting scene since 1971 said a knifing three decades ago is the last time he saw or heard of violent crime in that area.

"There's not much (violence) at all," said the resident, who declined to give his name. "Occasionally I'd read about a mugging somewhere ... but in the recent years it's become an upscale neighborhood with young professionals moving in."

Other residents agreed with the man, saying the area has always felt safe.
