The San Francisco Police Commission is set to hold a special meeting Monday to being the process of finding a successor for the city's outgoing police chief and for the chief to formally announce her intention to retire.
The meeting, at City Hall, will also give the public the opportunity to weigh in on the search for a new chief.
"My intent is to also have at least a couple of public meetings in the city to give community members the opportunity to tell us what they would like to see in a new chief," said San Francisco Police Commission President Theresa Sparks.
Sparks says the process has to begin now since Fong plans to retire at the end of April even though the Commission does not usually hold meetings between Christmas and the first of the year.
"Because there's such a short period of time I thought it was important we get the process started and because we were not formally noted by the chief of her intent," said Sparks.
On December 20, Chief Fong announced her retirement on a radio program hosted by Mayor Newsom.
The Commission was unaware of Fong's intention to retire until about 45 minutes before it was made public.
"It would have been better to have more notice so we could have more time to understand the process of bringing in a new chief."
But be that as it may, Sparks has contacted San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and wants to work with him on finding a new chief of police.
