SF General Hospital Faces Possible Closure

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― San Francisco voters are being asked to pass a $887 million bond measure to help rebuild San Francisco General Hospital; without the funds the city's only trauma center will be forced to close.

The issue causing the possible closure is the need for a seismic retrofitting.

"Anyone who doesn't think it can happen doesn't need to look any further than Reseda [or] Fresno," states Health Director Dr. Mitch Katz.

The only opposition to rebuilding the hospital concerns its current location; in the middle of old brick buildings that could tumble in an earthquake and the price tag.

"Two years ago the hospital costs $622 million, now they're building a kind of trophy hospital and it costs $877.4 million," claims George Wooding, a West of Twin Peaks activist.

"This is the true cost of it. Yes hospitals are expensive, but we need this hospital in San Francisco," retorts Dr. Katz, defending the sole trauma center in San Francisco.
