SF-Based AsianWeek Ending Publication

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― San Francisco-based AsianWeek—the long-running English-language Asian-American newspaper—will stop publication in 2009.

Like mainstream newspapers, AsianWeek has seen readership and advertising revenue fall in a softening economy.

Editor and publisher of AsianWeek, Ted Fang, says the paper's last regular issue is scheduled for Jan. 2. But he says special editions may be considered.

The paper was established in 1979. It had a circulation of 60,000 and served as a platform for issues that affected Asian-Americans.

Community advocates credit the English-language paper with playing a unifying role in a community divided by ethnicity and language.

They say the paper's closing leaves a gap that will be hard to fill.
