SF General To Pay Millions In Patient Misdiagnosis

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― San Francisco General Hospital will pay out millions of dollars to settle a lawsuit involving a man who now requires 24-hour medical care after seeking treatment for a fever and cough.

City supervisors gave their approval Tuesday to a $5.1 million settlement payment stemming from a 2005 incident involving John Weatherspoon III.

Court documents show that hospital staff gave Weatherspoon— who was 40-years-old at the time—sedatives for what they thought was renal failure.

Weatherspoon then suffered cardiorespiratory failure after the staff allegedly failed to monitor following successive doses of sedatives he was given.

Weatherspoon suffered anoxic brain injury and now requires 24-hour care.

The money from the settlement will be used to pay for home care for the remainder of his life.
