San Francisco police are still investigating what led to a 15-year-old San Francisco girl being fatally struck by a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus at a Portola District intersection Thursday night, a police spokesman said Friday.
Police reported that the girl was hit and killed at about 8:40 p.m. by a No. 9 Express Muni bus at San Bruno Avenue and Bacon Street.
The girl was identified today by the San Francisco medical examiner's office as LaTrena Crosley.
Police spokesman Sgt. Neville Gittens said this morning that the 60-foot, articulated bus had just made a right turn from northbound San Bruno Avenue onto eastbound Bacon Street, when the girl ran into the street, hit the side of the bus, and got caught under its right rear wheels.
The bus stopped and police and paramedics were called, but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene, Gittens said. No charges have been filed and no citations were issued, Gittens added.
Police Inspector Dean Taylor said Friday morning that a determination had not been made regarding whether the girl was in a crosswalk when the accident occurred.
Taylor did not say whether rainy conditions may have contributed to the accident.
Muni spokesman Alan Siegel said Friday he would not discuss details of the incident until a police investigation was completed. He added that the bus driver has been placed on standard administrative leave pending his agency's own investigation.
According to Siegel, this was the sixth pedestrian fatality involving a Muni vehicle in San Francisco this year.
The accident is the second pedestrian fatality in San Francisco in less than a week.
At about midnight Saturday, Greg Anstett, 51, of San Francisco, died after being struck by a Jeep Cherokee in a crosswalk at Van Ness Avenue and Post Street.
Crosley was the second pedestrian struck at the same intersection Thursday. At about 5:50 a.m., a vehicle hit and injured a man in his 50s. He was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital and treated for minor injuries, police reported.
