The Fruitvale BART station reopened just before noon Friday about an hour after some 200 anti-immigration raid demonstrators arrived, apparently en route to a San Francisco gathering. The station was one of four that saw service interrupted in the East Bay Friday morning.
A BART spokesman said service was disrupted at the Fruitvale, Coliseum, West Oakland and Richmond stations earlier Friday morning after protesters jumped gates before trying to board San Francisco-bound trains.
Around 9:15 a.m., BART closed the Richmond Station and detained one of many people protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement policies. Two other protesters were detained by Richmond police, BART spokesman Linton Johnson said.
BART said the first incident at the Fruitvale Station occured when about 100 people jumped the gates a little before 10:00 a.m.
Authorities said the protesters were heading to a noontime rally on Sansome Street in San Francisco.
A spokesman said trains were stopping at all stations in the system now.
