A 21-year-old man pleaded not guilty in San Mateo County Superior Court Friday afternoon to charges of felony assault in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old boy in Redwood City last weekend.
Luis Herrera told police the teenage victim, Matthew Johnson, was stabbed early Saturday morning after Johnson and two friends threw a rock at a car that contained Herrera and several others, Redwood City police Capt. Ron Matuszak said.
But Herrera is not believed to be the one who stabbed Johnson, and the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office charged him with felony assault as opposed to murder, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Herrera was taken into custody Wednesday at his home on Hoover Street after several anonymous tips were made to the Police Department, Matuszak said.
The two boys who were with Johnson when he was killed told investigators they had been throwing rocks at cars, according to Matuszak.
"Both surviving victims admit the boys were throwing rocks at passing cars," Matuszak said. Neither of the boys was injured.
"It's very sad," Matuszak said. "Most adolescent boys do one or two foolish things before they become adults, but the penalty for that shouldn't be to be stabbed."
Herrera's bail was set at $25,000. He faces up to four years in prison if convicted, Wagstaffe said.
