Police Chief Wayne Tucker has offered to show up as a police presence at two Sunday services at St. Anthony's Church, after denying a priest's request for an officer outside his church in the wake of recent violence.
Tucker told a crowd of community members and parishioners of St. Antony's Church Wednesday he didn't have enough manpower to devote an officer. He also didn't want to make a promise he couldn't keep.
Fr. Jesus Nieto-Ruiz requested the officer after recent violence in the area. On Monday, police say rival gang members opened fire into a crowd in front of St. Anthony's, following a memorial for Jose Luis Buenrostro, who was shot to death by police officers March 19th. Several days later, two men were arrested at a makeshift memorial for Buenrostro.
