McCain Touts Free Trade Agenda In Union City

UNION CITY (BCN) ― Republican presidential candidate John McCain told a group of Silicon Valley business leaders in Union City Thursday that he believes protectionist trade majors will harm the American economy.

McCain said, "I don't believe in the siren song of protectionism and erecting barriers to commerce."

Apparently referring to proposals by Democratic candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to change the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement, McCain said, "Unilaterally renegotiating NAFTA would be the most harmful thing to our future."

McCain's discussion is part of a Silicon Valley Global Competition Roundtable at Finelite Inc., which designs and builds lighting systems, to discuss global competition, trade, economics and innovation.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cisco Systems Chairman John Chambers, former eBay Chief Executive Meg Whitman and other business leaders also joined McCain at the discussion.
