Marin Humane Society Takes In Neglected Dogs
NOVATO (CBS 5 / BCN) ―
About 100 small dogs arrived at the Marin Humane Society in Novato Friday night after they were taken from a mobile home in southern Arizona on Wednesday.
More than 750 dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, were seized from the Arizona home where an elderly couple that bred the dogs for sale reportedly became overwhelmed trying to care for them and reported the situation to authorities, according to the Marin Humane Society.
Officials with the Humane Society of Southern Arizona described the living conditions as the worst they'd ever seen.
The Marin Humane Society offered to take as many dogs as could fit in a cargo van back to Marin County, according to Gillian Hersh, marketing and creative services manager.
"The Southern Arizona Humane Society is a small shelter with very limited housing and resources to handle the magnitude of this case," said Kim Lanham-Snyder, Marin Humane Society animal care director, in a prepared statement. "We are dedicated to helping our friends in Tucson and anticipate a great response from our dog-loving Bay Area community."
Most of the dogs arriving in Marin County are small Chihuahuas. Chinese Crested and Japanese Chin dogs are also being transported to the Marin Humane Society.
Adoption forms can be obtained at the Marin Humane Society's Web site at
