64-Year-Old Man Killed In Hayward I-880 Crash
HAYWARD (BCN) ―
A 64-year-old man died after being ejected from a Ford Explorer that collided with another vehicle on Interstate Highway 880 in Hayward Sunday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported around 3:20 p.m. on northbound 880 just south of Industrial Parkway, CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.
A preliminary investigation indicates the man was driving north on the highway in his 1999 Ford Explorer when an 18-year-old man driving a 1996 Toyota Corolla in the adjacent lane applied his brakes and steered into the Explorer to avoid hitting a car in front of him, according to the CHP.
The 64-year-old man was ejected from the Explorer and was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP reported.
The 18-year-old man reportedly was uninjured.
The crash shut down all lanes of northbound Highway 880 in the area for more than an hour, and was not entirely cleared from the scene until about 6:30 p.m.
Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash, the CHP said.
