Coroner ID's Suspect Who Collapsed At E. Bay Mall
PLEASANTON (BCN) ―
A 32-year-old Fresno man who collapsed and died Thursday night after struggling with security officers at Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton has been identified Saturday by the Alameda County coroner's bureau.
Alex Gomes II entered a Macy's store inside the mall on Stoneridge Mall Road and allegedly stole something at about 8:35 p.m., Pleasanton police said.
Security officers at the mall then attempted to arrest and detain Gomes, who allegedly resisted and assaulted security personnel, according to police.
Police responded, but on the way to the mall received an additional report that Gomes had become unresponsive, the department reported.
Arriving police found security staff providing medical attention to Gomes, who was unconscious on the ground.
Paramedics were called to the mall and administered care on the man before he was transported to Valley Care Medical Center. Gomes died at the hospital a short time later, police said.
Investigators interviewed witnesses and security staff involved in the arrest and reviewed video in an attempt to determine what happened, according to the Police Department, which is investigating the incident. Officers reported that Gomes' body had no visible injuries.
An autopsy has not been conducted, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.
