GG Bridge Toll May Rise During Peak Hours
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ―
So-called "congestion pricing" could bring in millions more federal transportation dollars to the region by adding an additional charge to Golden Gate bridge commuters during peak hours.
The idea of congestion pricing would most likely be in addition to the current, proposed toll increase to $6 for cash-paying drivers, and $5 for drivers using FasTrak. The exact amount of the congestion pricing hasn't been determined, but officials are looking at ways to satisfy the requirements of a federal grant that could bring over $150 million dollars to the region.
The congestion pricing increase would go towards peak hour bus and ferry service, but it would not be used for Doyle Drive improvements.
Last year, the federal government offered $158 million dollars in transportation funds, with the catch that there be a congestion toll in the Golden Gate Bridge corridor. The government is requiring a decision on the congestion toll by the end of next month. Any increase wouldn't take effect until fall of next year.
