Congressman Henry Waxman has issued a subpoena to force the Environmental Protection Agency to turn over documents about its decision to deny California permission to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks.
Waxman, who chairs the House oversight committee, announced the move Thursday after negotiating unsuccessfully to get EPA to voluntarily turn over documents, including hundreds of communications with the White House and Justice Department.
Waxman and other Democrats have accused EPA of denying California the greenhouse gas waiver for political, not scientific, reasons. EPA denies that. Its decision also blocked at least 16 other states that wanted to adopt California's tailpipe controls.
