Embattled Oakland Administrator Now Fired By Mayor
OAKLAND (CBS 5) ―
Oakland's embattled city administrator, accused of tipping off a nephew about a police gang probe, was fired late Tuesday -- just days after being placed on paid administrative leave until her planned July 31 retirement.
In a letter obtained by CBS 5, Mayor Ron Dellums gave Deborah Edgerly the termination notice. It came amid ongoing accusations that Edgerly, 56, intervened with a police investigation into the notorious Acorn gang. The gang is believed responsible for a significant amount of violent crime in the city.
The decision to fire Edgerly also came after the Oakland Tribune reported earlier Tuesday that Edgerly was seeking to postpone her retirement until she could "answer the allegations and repair my reputation."
Sources familiar with the situation have said Edgerly could face criminal charges for potentially warning her nephew, William Lovan, 27, an alleged Acorn gang member, about the police probe.
"I have elected to terminate you, effective immediately,"
Dellums wrote in his letter sent to Edgerly's home. It did not cite a specific reason for his decision.
