Coast Guard Rescues Lone Sailor Near Point Reyes

POINT REYES (AP) ― The lone sailor of a 28-foot sailboat was rescued in rough waters off Point Reyes on Saturday by a U.S. Coast Guard rescue ship and helicopter.

Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received notification at about 3:40 p.m. Saturday that the sailing vessel "Druthers," which was heading south from Neah Bay, Washington, may have issued a distress call from Drake's Bay, Coast Guard operations controller Royce Heckendorn said.

The Coast Guard launched an HH-65 "Dolphin" helicopter and a 47-foot motor lifeboat to the area in heavy storm conditions, Heckendorn said.

The Coast Guard team located the sailboat at about 5 p.m., after the vessel's anchor line had snapped, Heckendorn said.

The rescue crews were able to tow the sailboat to Pier 45 in San Francisco Bay at 12:30 a.m., Heckendorn said.

The 67-year-old man was briefly hospitalized due to bruised ribs, according to Heckendorn.
