Berkeley Tree Sitters Celebrate A Year In The Oaks

 Environment & The Green Beat

BERKELEY (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― It was December 1st, 2006 when a group of protestors climbed into a grove of oak trees on the campus of U.C. Berkeley to protest the construction of a new athletic center on the site.

This December, police were on hand for the one-year anniversary to make sure the tree sitters didn't use the event to mount a more vigorous demonstration. But there were no issues, just chocolate cake, balloons and a giant birthday card.

"Being an empowered individual is such a blessing," said one tree sitter. "We're up here actually taking our lives and putting them on the line for something we believe in."

The university maintains the protest is illegal, and officials are hoping to soon force an end to it. Fences have been constructed around the protestors and police presence has been ramped up.  Still, the tree sitters say they have no intentions of coming down anytime soon.
