UC Berkeley Acquires Rep. Lantos Archives

BERKELEY (AP) ― The University of California, Berkeley has acquired the papers of the late Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor to serve in Congress.

The director of UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library spoke with Lantos about housing his personal archives in January, when the 14-term Democratic congressman disclosed he was suffering from cancer of the esophagus.

The talks continued with Lantos' survivors after he died in February.

The collection includes congressional briefing notebooks, files on countries Lantos studied as founder of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, campaign memorabilia and letters written in his native Hungarian when he was a graduate student at the University of Washington.
