Benicia Coffee Roaster Machine Explodes Injuring 1
BENICIA (BCN) ―
A large coffee-roasting machine exploded in a Benicia coffee-making company Friday morning, causing an injury to an employee and a two-alarm fire, a fire captain said.
The machine, about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, exploded around 8:10 a.m. at the Bay Area Coffee Company at 4201 Industrial Way while it was burning off residue to clean itself, Capt. Joshua Chadwick said.
When it exploded, debris hit the employee and he was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries in a private vehicle.
Since the dispatcher was told there was an explosion, the fire was upgraded to a second alarm, but firefighters contained it to the single machine and put the fire out with one hose, Chadwick said.
It was contained around 8:23 a.m.
The building was not damaged, just the machine, and no other injuries were reported.
