Caltrans Unveils New Benicia-Martinez Bridge Lanes

BENICIA (CBS 5) ― Caltrans is ready to open the reconfigured lanes on the southbound Benicia-Martinez Bridge, with the southern half opening to drivers Friday morning and the northern half Saturday morning.

This is the structure that carried Interstate 680 traffic in both directions between Solano and Contra Costa Counties before the new span opened in August 2007. That span now carries only northbound traffic.

Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus said the newly configured lanes on the original bridge has wide shoulders and a pathway for cyclists and pedestrians, and has been designed to increase convenience and safety.
