A 22-year-old woman was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for a head injury she suffered Sunday when a car she was in slid off state Highway 1 near Bodega Bay and landed on a beach.
Officials said three people spent hours in the wrecked car that fell off a cliff before authorities were notified.
The California Highway Patrol was notified Sunday about 7:30 a.m. of the crash that left one woman with major injuries.
Officials said the woman had been able to free herself and call 9-1-1. She told officials who arrived at Salmon Creek Beach on the Sonoma coast that the car had gone off of the cliff hours earlier.
The woman, along with two other people, was stuck in the area for up to four hours after their car slid off a 50-to-60 foot cliff about 4 a.m. and landed upside down on the beach, Bodega Bay Fire Battalion Chief Todd Rollings said.
A Sonoma County sheriff's helicopter and the Bodega Bay fire department were called in to help free the other two people from the wreckage.
A 26-year-old man and 22-year-old woman had to be extricated through the back windshield and suffered minor injuries.
Rollings did not know the condition later Sunday of the woman who suffered head trauma.
The cause of the incident was under investigation and could possibly be weather-related, Rollings said.
