Repairs to sections of a Bay Bridge fender damaged by the Cosco Busan accident on Nov. 7 have been accomplished three weeks ahead of schedule, the California Department of Transportation announced Thursday.
The fender is designed to protect bridge towers in the event of a ship accident. It did just that the morning of Nov. 7, when a 900-foot container ship slammed into one of the Bay Bridge towers.
The tower was not damaged in the accident and traffic on the bridge was unaffected.
Caltrans said the final cost of the repairs, which was granted through an emergency contract, will be about $1.5 million rather than $2 million.
