Big Rig Crash Snarled I-580 Traffic In Livermore
LIVERMORE (CBS 5 / BCN) ―
A crash involving three big-rigs on eastbound Interstate Highway 580 just outside of Livermore caused major delays for the Monday afternoon and evening commute, the California Highway Patrol said.
The first big-rig was in the right lane moving slowly as it began its ascent up the Altamont Pass about 12:30 p.m. when a faster-moving big-rig read-ended it, Officer Steve Creel said.
A third big-rig then came along and slammed into the back of the second big-rig.
The driver of the first truck was not injured, but the other two drivers were both transported to hospitals. One was airlifted to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley and the other was taken by ground ambulance to San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp, Creel said.
Ten to 15 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled on the roadway.
The CHP kept the two right lanes of the highway closed until about 6:30 p.m. as crews worked to clear the big-rigs and clean up the fuel.
While the two left lanes remained open during the cleanup, commuters still experienced major delays.
Motorists were diverted by the CHP to alternate routes to the Central Valley, including E-4, E-12, E-80 and E-152.
