E. Bay Suspect's Death Wish Shuts I-580 For Hours
SAN LEANDRO (BCN) ―
A Stockton man who evaded sheriff's officers by running onto an Interstate Highway 580 overpass in San Leandro Saturday, forcing authorities to temporarily close the roadway while he threatened to jump, was arrested after hours of negotiation.
Alameda County sheriff's deputies arrested Frank Valdez, 44, at about 11 a.m. for threatening a San Leandro resident with a knife, sheriff's spokesman J.D. Nelson said.
The arrest came after Valdez was coerced off of the overpass between 154th and 160th avenues where negotiations to prevent him from jumping lasted more than three hours.
Highway 580 was shut down until the Alameda County Sheriff's Crisis Intervention Unit convinced Valdez to turn himself in at about 11 a.m.
