Costner, Kutcher At Alameda Coast Guard Ceremony

ALAMEDA (AP) ― Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher received heroes' welcomes in Alameda today when they dropped by a U.S. Coast Guard station to promote their upcoming movie "The Guardian."

The movie aims to do for the Coast Guard's elite rescue swimmers what "Top Gun" did for Navy fighter pilots.

Costner told the assembled "Coasties" during the first stop of a planned multistate tour of Coast Guard stations that actors "are not nearly as impressive in person as we seem to be on film."

The film, opening Sept. 15, tells the story of two Coast Guard swimmers who rescue fisherman and boaters from dangerous ocean waters.

Costner plays a veteran sent to teach in Kodiak, Alaska, after his crew is lost in a crash. Kutcher's character is the cocky newcomer.
