Editor's note: The following is a firsthand account of the scene in London following the foiled terror plot from CBS 5 Eye On The Bay's Liam Mayclem Travelers at London's Gatwick and Heathrow airports faced hours of misery Thursday morning after learning that flights were cancelled and their vacations were in jeopardy.
I was among the casualties, learning as I flew into Gatwick from the U.S. that the airport was at the center of a foiled terror plot.
Like thousands of other tourists, I was subjected to hours of frustration, sitting, waiting for news about my onward flight.
At 1:30 GMT came the grim news I had feared, all flights out of Heathrow and Gatwick were cancelled. Travelers were told to check back with airlines tomorrow or to go online and rebook their flight for a later date.
No one appeared too concerned abour the threats posed by terrorists.
As the screams of upset children echo throughout the airport lounge here, most travellers were simply eager to rebook flights and get on with their holiday plans.
Me too. I will spend a few nights with friends in London and try and get another flight out to Spain to join my family over the weekend.
Not a great way to begin my vacation. Right now, I wish I was back home in San Francisco.
