3 CURTAIN CALL
American Idiot
Berkeley Rep
2025 Addison Street, Berkeley
Now until November 15th
Green Day's breakthrough 2004 record American Idiot has now found a home on the theater stage thanks to the folks at Berkeley Rep. It was, says director Mike Dirnt, "the beautiful lyrics and poetry that drew me to the project." As you might imagine American Idiot rocks from beginning to end. The staging is sensational. The music packs a punch for the full 90 minutes. The performances are nothing short of stellar. Punk goes theatrical who knew, and it works. Props to our East Bay power punk trio and the risk takers at Berkeley rep. The run here is limited so snag a ticket while you can as American Idiot is on it's way to Broadway. Special discounts are available for theatre goers under 30. Rock on!

6 AT THE MOVIES
Michael Jackson - This Is It
NOW showing
This Is It, directed by Kenny Ortega . This music movie shows Michael Jackson the artist, the perfectionist, the king of pop as he has never been seen before. The film was made in the few weeks before his death as MJ prepared for what may well have been the greatest music show ever. Jackson still had the voice, the moves, the control with the spotlight shining where it always should have on Michael Jackson the artist. This Is It is bursting at the seams with Jackson hits and performances and throughout you are reminded how sad it is that he did not live to begin and complete this tour. This Is It is one of the most compelling music films I have ever seen. Perhaps the best from MJ was not to come but in this one hour fifty minute film we learn he was indeed the best at what he did. Michael Jackson, a stunning performer gone but not forgotten anytime soon.

7 HEAR THIS CD
Sting - If On A Winter's Night
NOW available
There is a Winters gale blowing in over the moors and you will find it on this new chilly offering from Sting - If on a Winter's Night. There are two good tracks on the record an upbeat blue-grass number "Soul Cake" and a rework of Hounds of Winter. That aside this 15 track record is a self indulgent world music romp featuring everything from gaelic revelry to middle eastern rhythms. I am Sting's biggest fan but this latest icy offering did nothing to warm the cockles of my heart. Perhaps I should listen again wearing a woolly jumper, watching snow fall as the hounds of winter close in! Sorry Sting.
