1 SCOTTISH GASTRO PUB
Martin's West Pub
831 Main Street, Redwood City
Lunch: Monday to Friday 11am to 2.30pm
Dinner: Monday to Saturday 5pm - 11pm

At last, a destination pub with posh but approachable and affordable nosh in Redwood City. This brand-spanking new pub is very much about the food. Of course, I can only comment on the delicious apps I devoured at the opening bash: pork belly on Irish soda bread, heaven. Goat cheese fritters than melt in your mouth. Scotch eggs with quail eggs instead. Fantastic. You'll find more than classic pub fare here, Martin's West offers a menu full of surprises: Haggis anyone? Ooh, did I mention the deep fried mars bar? YUMMY! The vibe is cozy and comfortable as any pub should be. I highly recommend it. And for folks in the city, it's a 30-minute ride on the train. Leave the car behind and have a night out in Redwood City, you'll be glad you did. The lovely folk here will even cover the cost of your train ticket!

2 ALFRESCO BRUNCH
Miss Pearls Jam House
1 Broadway, Jack London Square, Oakland
Saturday and Sunday Brunch 9am - 3pm

Spice up your weekend and take a ferry across the Bay to Jack London Square for an unbeatable al fresco brunch at Miss.Pearl's Jam House. This joint was once a hot spot (Phoenix Hotel) in San Francisco but it's back after a seven year hiatus in Oaklland's Jack London Square. This soul food spot is back in it's culinary groove serving up flavors of the tropics that will make your tummy happy: sweet potato fries, black-eyed pea fritters and crispy catfish fingers. Yum Yum Yum. The cheesy dungeness sweetbread is the way to go for brunch! Outside dining allows one to enjoy lunch, brunch or dinner while looking out over the Bay. Miss.Pearl's is jamming once again.

Treat yourself to some great soul food and sensational sounds at Farmer Brown's Sunday brunch. Wash it all down with a refreshing mimosa and the sounds of the south spilling from the band up front. And a great deal, too, a right royal treat for your ears and your tummy for $15! 4 BEST OF THE MED
La Mediterranee
2210 Fillmore Street, San Francisco
Daily 11am - 10pm

For a taste of the Med like none other, venture to this Fillmore Street gem in San Francisco - a fixture on the street for 30 years. It's a small joint with big flavors: the chicken kebab is scrumptious, the tender lamb lule - wow - and the chicken pomegranate baked in wild herbs - heaven. A great spot for an intimate dinner for two, book a table after the sun goes down.

5 HOT SPOT
Flour and Water
2401 Harrison Street, San Francisco
Daily 11am - Midnight

There is a new culinary kid on the block and it's providing a perfect mix. Located on the edge of the Mission in San Francisco, Chef Tom serves up great, fresh, local Italian food for all. The menu features dishes that are familiar like homemade pastas and perfect thin-crust Neapolitan pizzas, as well as surprises like warm potato salad, lamb tongue, shaved asparagus and arugula salad with quail egg - heaven. Perfect place for a date night or dinner with a group of pals. This spot is hot right now. Reservations are required but you may get a seat if you just show up before 6pm or after 9pm.

6 STREET FOOD WITH SOUL
Little Skillet
330 Ritch Street, San Francisco
Monday - Saturday 11am - 3:30pm
Fridays 5pm - 7pm

There is a new trend in the Bay Area of restaurants without tables. These street food vendors and chefs are popping up everywhere. The guys behind Farmer Brown are among the most recent food pirates to set up shop. A walk up window at 330 Ritch street has a chalk board with enticing offerings: Fried chicken and waffles, Prawn poy boy sandwich, Corn dog wrapped in a bacon - need I say more. This spot already has a healthy following so arrive early, grab your food and perch on a milk crate on the sidewalk. Little Skillet, big on flavour and big on servings. A perfect spot for lunch. You may also want to consider their new Friday Happy Hour (5 - 7pm) with reduced priced cocktails and menu and LIVE Jazz.

7 AMERICAN CLASSICS
Nob Hill Grille
969 Hyde Street, San Francisco
Daily 5pm - 10pm

Every neighborhood has a gem of a restaurant and I found one this past week on San Francisco's Nob Hill: Nob Hill Grille on the corner of Hyde and Bush. The food is classic American and every morsel offered will make your mouth water. The spinach and artichoke dip is a good way to start, yum yum yum. I had the open face chicken pot pie for my main, stacked to the gills with fresh vegetable, swimming in a sherry cream sauce and a light puff pasty crust on top and bottom, so incredibly good. The best seat in the house is at the counter watching the chef make culinary magic in the open kitchen. And then came dessert: Brioche Cinnamon Bread Pudding- Served with caramel bourbon sauce, topped with candied walnuts and spun sugar. Yes, I left with a smile and a very happy tummy.

8 NOE VALLEY EAT
Bistro 24
4123 24th Street, San Francisco
Tuesday to Sunday 5:30pm to Midnight

There is a new kid on the block on 24th Street in Noe Valley and it's fast becoming the spot to eat. Bistro 24 with Chef Pierre Mange at the helm is serving up American classics with his own special twist and a serious nod to local purveyors. The menu offers familiar favorites: baked mac & cheese but Chef Pierre's ranks among the best I have ever had. 3 layers of cheese, cheddar, gruyere and parmesan with a small smattering of ham. The Lamb sliders are also a must have, tender juicy lamb with fire roasted gypsy peppers and feta. Chef Pierre is creating the magic and some that Miss.Millie's (1995 - 2002) once did in the same kitchen. Bistro 24 gets 24 stars!

9 CHAMPAGNE WISHES AND CAVIAR DREAMS
Waterbar
399 The Embarcadero, San Francisco
Monday night Champagne and Shellfish Dinner
My recent three course dinner ($40) featured a delicious Dungeness Crab Salad on a bed of watermelon and mint. The main course was Grilled One Half Dungeness Crab in chili and garlic sauce with shoestring potatoes on the side. The sweet treat at the end came in the form of a Summer Berry Pie that was just delish. The meal came with champagne pairings for twenty dollars more. One of the best dinners I have had in an age with a million dollar view of the waterfront to boot.

10 A TASTE OF MOROCCO
Aziza
5800 Geary Blvd (between 22nd Ave & 23rd Ave)
San Francisco
Wednesday to Monday 5.30pm to 10.30pm

There is so much to love about Aziza:The warm inviting space, friendly and proffessional staff and food to die for. The $55 menu is the way to go: five delicious courses of Moroccan cuisine that will blow your socks off. The avocado and beet salad to begin was perfect, followed by a yummy artichoke soup, ahhh. Then lamb meatballs with warm grapes and a herb vinaigrette that hit all the right notes. So far so good, it got better with the main: tender braised beef with a carrot-tomato stew on a bed of couscous, delicious. And then came dessert. Coma. Nuff said. Ooh the cocktails, wow, spirits light and dark concocted with muddled herbs, spices, vegetables and fruits. The blood orange vodka and mint had me set for the night. Aziza is great value, the service spot on. I highly recommend it, you will not be disappointed.
