Overview of College Internship Program

The CBS 5 unpaid internship program has been in existence since January 1975. It is designed to provide practical experience to students interested in pursuing careers in broadcasting and related fields. The program is ongoing.

Currently-enrolled college students who can receive course credit may choose any of the following areas for their internship:

CBS5.COM: Assist producers in posting news, feature stories and video to the Web site. Learn about news production on the web, web page management and use of content management systems. Flexible schedule as assigned. Contact: Carlos Castañeda: cecastaneda@kpix.cbs.com.  

THE CW BAY AREA CREATIVE SERVICES: (The CW Bay Area Pod Squad): Interns responsible for planning, producing, shooting and editing promo shoots for the CW Bay Area. Assisting Creative Services Producers and designers with promotion projects. Interns also responsible for writing blogs and maintaining website. Check out the PodSquad at cwbayarea.com. Minimum of 10 maximum 20 hours a week, including one full shoot day per week. Schedules arranged at the beginning of the semester. THIS INTERNSHIP IS FULL FOR FALL 2008

SPORTS: Intern will learn to assemble and prepare television news sportscasts. He/she will log sporting events both on television and at various locations in the Bay Area, edit highlights, proofread scripts and supers, running scripts to talent, assisting talent and producers in all areas of tv sports production. Minimum of 10 and maximum of 20 hours, 7 days a week: Mostly weekends and evenings. Some days.

MARKETING/CREATIVE SERVICES: Interns will receive an overview of the CBS 5 Marketing/Creative Services department with an emphasis on news promotion. Interns will receive an overview of strategic branding and marketing principles. Will assist Promotion Manager and producers with filing, tape library management and phone duty. Responsibilities include logging tapes, searching for news footage, and assisting on studio shoots. Will attend department meetings and will be exposed to desktop video editing system. Strong organizational and writing skills are essential. Minimum of 24 hours a week.

PUBLIC/COMMUNITY AFFAIRS: Organize, research, and prepare written community affairs documents. Contact: Rosemary Roach roach@kpix.cbs.com

NEWS ASSIGNMENT DESK: Support assignment editors in answering viewer and reporter calls, researching stories and sorting through mail and faxes. Position provides -overview- of TV newsroom operations and production. Minimum of 10 hours and maximum of 20 hours, 7 days a week. Flexible hours 5am - 11pm. NEWS PRODUCTION: Interns support production assistants and show producers in researching stories, screening/logging tapes, ripping and distributing show scripts. Position provides -overview- of TV newsroom production. Minimum of 10 and maximum of 20 hours, 7 days a week. Flexible schedules from 5am to 11pm. Contact Gretchen White white@kpix.cbs.com

EYE ON THE BAY: Support production team for nightly "Eye on the Bay" show. Will include phone work dealing with viewers and bookings, logging field tapes, research, assisting on shoots, and other overall production duties. Position provides overall production experience and an opportunity to assist in every area of production, including editing, shooting, producing, research, etc. Need highly motivated people to be integral part of producing the show. NEWS SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT UNIT: Interns support special projects producer and reporters in developing and researching stories, screening and logging tapes and other duties as assigned. Position provides good -overview- of special projects and production. Minimum of 10 and maximum of 20 hours, 7 days a week. Schedules vary according to project. NEWS POLITICAL RESEARCHER/ELECTIONS: In election years only. Assist Elections producer in all aspects of planning and development. Research and compile background on candidates and issues and assist in composing elections briefing book. Compile data for computer race results display. Contact Gretchen White  white@kpix.cbs.com

PUBLIC RELATIONS/COMMUNICATIONS & BAY SUNDAY/PUBLIC AFFAIRS PROGRAM: Locate, clip and maintain filing system of newspaper press clippings; identify and pitch stories to reporters; work with talent to schedule public appearance; compile awards entry materials and maintain awards files; assists in answering phones and viewer inquiries; special projects as assigned. The intern will attain working knowledge of the functions of Public Relations within a television station. Intern will have direct contact with the press, critics and station talent. Intern will also have opportunity to develop writing and publicist skills. BUSINESS: In conjunction with the full-time members of the KBCW/KPIX Business Department, the Business Department intern will assist in accounting, transaction processing, record-keeping and research. The intern will have an opportunity to see how accounting processes impact all departments of a mid-sized firm. Some clerical work may be assigned

SALES MARKETING: Responsibilities may include maintaining paperwork related to sales orders: filing; coordinating and preparing materials for sales presentations; organizing information, schedules and research for Account Executives. Will also be fulfilling various client requests including making tape dubs. Create video sales presentations. Work with other departments on sales projects. Work on community events will include preparation of materials in advance of events and presence at some events. Updating of sales marketing calendars and other marketing materials. DESIGN: Intern supports the design department with projects relating to broadcast, print and the web. Strong design and communication skills are a must. Applicant should be a design major and skilled user of Photoshop, After Effects and Illustrator.
