Oakland Sidewalk Fixed After CBS 5 Report

Oakland Sidewalk Fixed After CBS 5 Investigation

oakland, sidewalk, fixed, Montclair, College Avenue, Niels Dahl-Jensen

After years of bemoaning the state of sidewalks in Oakland's Montclair neighorhood, business owner Joe Sullivan was floored by the sights and sounds of fresh concrete being poured, shoveled and.

Montclair Antiques store owner Niels Dahl-Jensen is even more surprised with the presence of construction crews.

"When you guys (CBS 5 Investigates) were here before I said that it wasn't going to get fixed but I guess I'm wrong," Dahl-Jensen said.

It was a sidewalk hazard in front of Dahl-Jensen's store that CBS 5 Investigates pointed out in our first story last Thursday, a hazard Dahl-Jensen's been trying to get fixed for more than two years and for good reason. A surveillance camera captured pedestrians tripping and falling time and time again.

Previously, Dahl-Jensen had told CBS 5 Investigates that "people were really hurting themselves". And even though he called the city of Oakland repeatedly for the last two years, city officials told us that the tripping spot in front of the Montclair Antiques shop wasn't in their database.

But 24 hours after CBS 5 Investigates first reported the story, not only has the city fixed the spot in front of the antiques store with brand-new concrete, crews are also fixing other deteriorating sidewalks throughout the popular shopping district of Montclair.

Joe Sullivan and Niels Dahl-Jensen are amazed at the city's quick response in fixing the sidewalk problems. Now the only hazards left on the sidewalks appear to be the construction barricades.
