UCSF Doctors, Brown & Toland Part Ways
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ―
The television ads are provocative. A patient is first given the brutal diagnosis of cancer, then she's informed she cannot see a top Bay Area cancer doctor. But under the slick production values, they reek of a soured relationship between two health care providers.
Bottom line: The decade-long relationship between the Brown & Toland Medical Group and UCSF physicians is over. Their contract expires at the end of the year. Doctors at UCSF have joined forces with a new group, Hill Physicians. It is unclear what provoked the split.
If you stick with Brown & Toland, HMO patients now seeing now seeing a UCSF specialist are entitled by law to continue with that care through the end of 2010. But if you want to see a new UCSF specialist after December 31st, you'll have to get preauthorization from Brown & Toland. Both groups are currently negotiating an out-of-network referral contract.
