CA Halts 'Twist-Tie' Program To Stop Apple Moth

SONOMA (AP) ― Aerial spraying to combat an invasive moth has drummed up plenty of controversy around Northern California, but now a ground campaign to stop the crop-destroying pest is also getting resistance.

The state Department of Food and Agriculture has suspended a program to place hundreds of "twist ties" around Sonoma laced with chemicals that disrupt the reproductive cycle of the light brown apple moth.

Some residents say the twist ties could harm the environment if they should fall into a nearby creek.

The state says it will postpone the Sonoma program until after fish and wildlife experts can study its impact.

Santa Cruz and Monterey counties previously sued to stop aerial spraying of the chemical there after some complained it would cause respiratory problems.
