From over-the-counter to prescription drugs, painkillers offer relief - but all can have troubling side effects. Now, scientists have embarked on a Bay Area study of twins to try to better understand pain - and the impact of medication.
A three-year federally-funded study of 125 pairs of twins will examine the differences between sets of twins to see how they react.
The ultimate goal of the study is to develop more targeted and effective pain medications, and to identify who is at risk of addiction. Scientists said that similar reactions by sets of twins may mean a stronger genetic component to pain.
The study involves the participants placing their hands in ice water. Researchers are looking for both identical and fraternal twins.
