Doctors at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto say they've successfully separated 2-year-old twin girls who were joined at the chest and abdomen.
Doctors performed the 9-hour surgery Tuesday. They say outcome for Yurelia and Fiorella Rocha-Arias of San Jose, Costa Rica, is still unknown because it's a risky procedure.
The surgery was complicated because the twins shared a blood supply -- they were connected at the right atria of their hearts, and shared a single liver.
But surgeons say it went much better than expected.
The girls are recovering in the hospital's critical care facility.
The surgery was made possible because of donations from doctors, the hospital, a group called Mending Kids, and the Nicaraguan embassy in Costa Rica.
