1000s Wait Hours For H1N1 Flu Shots In Bay Area

OAKLAND (CBS 5 / BCN) ― The Alameda County Public Health Department vaccinated about 7,000 people Saturday during four H1N1 vaccination clinics in the county.

Health officials held the clinics, two of which were in Oakland along with one each in Hayward and Fremont.

Due to limited supplies of the vaccines, only pregnant women, young children, and people with chronic medical conditions or compromised immune systems were eligible to receive the vaccine.

The average wait time to receive the vaccine was about two hours, according to health officials.

The vaccine supply was enough to meet demand except at the clinic at the Lincoln Square Recreation Center in Oakland, where about 200 people were redirected to the clinic at the Ira Jenkins Recreation Center, also in Oakland.

One man stood in line about four hours with his wife to get the flu shot for their children. There were a few skirmishes over line jumping.

At a drive-through flu shot clinic at Doctor's Hospital in San Pablo, cars literally snaked through the neighborhood for several blocks.

It was a similar scene in Richmond, where Contra Costa Health Services held the first of four community H1N1 (swine) flu vaccination clinics at Hilltop Mall.

Both H1N1 and seasonal flu shots were offered for free to hundreds of Contra Costa County residents who waited in line for hours.

Because supplies of the H1N1 flu vaccine are limited, shots were available to only the following priorty groups: pregnant women; children 6 months through 4 years old; older children with chronic medical conditions; and people who live with or provide care for infants under 6 months of age.

Three other community flu clinics are planned to be held in Contra Costa County. For more information on upcoming community flu clinics, H1N1, and prevention tips, visit www.cchealth.org or call 1-888-959-9911 for prerecorded information.

In Santa Clara County, other clinic locations, dates and times will be added when more shipments of vaccine arrive. Continue to check on the Santa Clara County Public Health Department's web site for updates, www.sccgov.org/portal/site/phd.

In Alameda County, vaccinations will be available at different clinics throughout the county over four different Saturdays in November and December from : 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until supply depletes. There is more information on Alameda County Public Health Department's website, www.acphd.org.
