Flat Belly Diet Promises Tighter Tummy

(CBS) Forget crunches, and counting carbs. There's a new diet that claims to be tasty and healthy and promises flatter abs without the need to do crunches. It's called the "Flat Belly Diet".

Missy Bromwell, a mother of two, says she's tried crunches, counting carbs and more for a tighter tummy.

"I've tried a lot of different things; sit-ups crunches, running, the gym. Nothing has worked," explained Bromwell.

But now she plans to try a new diet which promises to take-off and target that belly fat with no exercise at all.

It's called the 'Flat Belly Diet'. It first appeared in "Prevention Magazine", and some say it's the next fat-burning blockbuster.

"Everybody wants a flat belly," exclaimed Lisa Dorfman, a renowned nutritionist. She says one of the keys to the "Flat Belly Diet" is a healthy dose of fat at every meal.

"When you do include fats at every meal it helps to satiate you. So you're not hungry a half-hour, an hour after you've eaten."

But it's not just any fat. It has to be mono-unsaturated fatty acids, or MUFA's.

"Mono-unsaturated fats are the fats that you primarily find in peanut oil, olive oil, and canola oil," said Dorfman.

The "Flat Belly Diet" begins with a four day anti-bloating phase, followed by 28 days of dieting.

The meals are 400 calories each, 4 hours apart, and based on the heart healthy Mediterranean diet.

"One of the positive points about this diet is that it does encourage you to select a variety of healthy food choices, whole grains, fruits, and vegetable into small meals throughout the day," said Dorfman.

While the plan claims to allow 1600 calories a day during the diet phase, Dorfman's own analysis finds it might be much lower than that.

"1000, 1100 is what I found for the anti-bloating phase, and then 1200 for the program, even though they say it is 1600 calories."

Missy Bromwell says she's going to give the "Flat Belly Diet" a try.

"I want my belly to look super-flat, I want it to look six-pack abs." Bromwell says she wants to have a bikini belly by summer.
