Refund Offered In Cantaloupe Salmonella Recall
WASHINGTON (CBS 5 / AP) ―
The FDA is telling people to throw out any cantaloupes from a Honduran company believed to be linked to a salmonella outbreak, and a Bay Area grocery chain is offering a full refund for products that could be
contaminated. Cantaloupe from Agropecuaria Montelibano, a Honduran grower and packer, according to FDA appears to be associated with a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak in the US and Canada.
Some 50 people across 16 states and nine people in Canada have fallen ill after eating the melons. There haven't been any deaths, but the Food and Drug Administration says 14 people have been hospitalized.
Grocers are advised to remove them from their stock, while people are advised to check with stores to see if any recently purchased cantaloupes came from Honduras.
In the Bay Area, Save Mart, S-Mart Foods, Lucky, and FoodMaxx Stores have removed from their shelves Garden Highway mixed fruit products, which may contain fresh, cut cantaloupe from the recall.
Consumers from those stores with a sell-by date of 3-22-08 can return the product for a full refund, according to a press release from Save Mart Supermarkets.
The FDA is also advising against purchasing or eating any bruised or damaged cantaloupes. And it recommends discarding cut cantaloupe if it's left at room temperature for more than two hours.
