Damage From SF Sushi Restaurant Fire At Least $1M

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― Damage from a sushi restaurant fire that spread to adjacent homes and businesses in San Francisco's Chinatown on Friday has been estimated to be at least $1 million, a fire department spokeswoman said Monday.

The two-alarm blaze at the Matcha sushi restaurant, which opened just over a week ago at 915 Kearny St., was reported just before 8:30 a.m. and was brought under control about an hour later.

The fire started in the kitchen area and spread upstairs into the residential part of the building, damaging seven or eight units, and to a neighboring liquor store and a cocktail lounge. More than 50 residents of the building were temporarily displaced.

Spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said Monday investigators are still gathering information and an exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Talmadge said initial estimates of the damage are $750,000 to the property and $250,000 to contents.
