Melamine was recently found in dog food products that were linked with pet illness.

Federal and state health inspectors have been sweeping through ethnic or Asian supermarkets, making sure no Chinese-made tainted milk products have made it to store shelves after tests in Asia found melamine in a popular Chinese milk candy called "White Rabbit."
On Tuesday, Health Inspector Milton Jordan looked for products containing the substance in the East Bay.
Jordan found the candy in a San Pablo market -- but only in boxes. The store yanked it off the shelves after the U.S. importer issued a recall.
"Generally, there's no need for alarm," said Jordan.
Chinese baby formula -- which killed four babies in China -- is already illegal in the U.S. Thousands of Chinese babies were also sickened.
Melamine is an industrial plastic powder, but food manufacturers have found it can boost protein levels. It's the same plastic used in tainted pet food that killed and sickened thousands of dogs and cats last year.
Countries throughout Asia are recalling or banning Chinese milk products, including:
- White Rabbit candy, Choice Dairy Fruit Bar Yoghurt Flavored Ice Confection, and the Dutch Lady brand of strawberry-flavored milk, all of which tested positive for melamine in Singapore.
- Milk from the Yili Group and the China Mengniu Dairy Company.
- Powered milk from Sanlu, Suncare, and Yashili.
