Wallet Wise Thursdays - 2/12/09

Eye on the Bay's new Thursday night series dedicated to saving money in this tough economy. Includes deals and discounts around the Bay Area.

COASTAL WALKABOUT ROADTRIP (Under $20 DAYTRIP!!!)

Sutro Baths Walkabout
Begin your morning with a walk around Sutro Baths in the Northwest Corner of San Francisco, just to the north of the famed Cliff House.  You can print out information on the history of the baths, by logging onto www.sutrobaths.com or by watching "Eye on the Bay's" half hour episode on our video page:

http://cbs5.com/video/?id=41582@kpix.dayport.com

From there, head south on the Great Highway, feel free to make stops, for instance, check out the old Dutch Windmills at Golden Gate Park.  Once you pass Daly City, you'll merge onto Highway 1 South towards Pacifica.

When on the coast, Eat Seafood!

Stop for lunch at Camelot's Fish and Chips and for $11, you can order two half orders of their famed fish and chips, wrapped in newspaper.

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

After you down your lunch, head south along Highway 1 (Cabrillo Highway) for 10 miles and take a right on California Avenue.  Follow to the end and park.  From there, you can walk down to the gorgeous tidal pools.  On low tide, you'll be able to spot everything from sea stars, to blue-green anemones, to itty bitty crabs.  This is a great spot for kids!

You can read more about the reserve, by logging onto their website:  www.fitzgeraldresere.com

Best Beaches!
Our two favorite beaches are San Gregorio State Beach, located at the intersection of San Gregorio Creek and Highway 1, and Pomponio State Beach, just south of San Gregorio.  Parking fees may apply, but that won't put you over the top of your $20 limit!

Produce Stands
Visit one of the many produce stands along Highway 1 and Highway 92, for some of the freshest, locally grown goods!  And the prices are great!  Pick up a sweet snack for the ride home, or some veggies for dinner when you arrive home after your inexpensive coastal walkabout!  Enjoy!

ONLINE PURGING
Craigslist is one spot to post your wares, both for sale and perhaps bartering,  Visit www.craigslist.com and get started by purging the items in your house that are just collecting dust.  Someone else is bound to find use for them!

Mothers Clubs
Mother's Clubs have become all the rage with moms around the Bay Area!  Not only does your club membership provide you with great forums and information on everything from daytrips, activities and support with raising your kids, the sites offer you a chance to post items that you're looking to sell, trade or giveaway.  Each club operates differently, but the resources are fantastic!

BUDGET SAVVY TIPS
For more information and tips on Budget Savvy Online Magazine, visit: www.budgetsavvymag.com

Publisher Melissa Tosetti recommends that on payday, you pay all your bills, fill up your gas tank and buy groceries for that pay period.

*To further cut down on your grocery bill, start by using up the items in your pantry and refrigerator that are still good and lurking.  Make meals that combine such ingredients that you may have forgotten about.  Don't use your kitchen pantry for storage, make use of everything!

*Cut down on your portions and save the extra portion(s) for leftover lunches and dinners the next day.  This will save money…and calories!

*Shop wisely!  You've all spent $100 at major markets and wondered, "what did I just buy?"  Melissa recommends Trader Joe's as a spot to find lower priced items, especially in the dairy department.  You can achieve several meals by purchasing prepared dinners and you'll find that all items are free of dyes, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils!

*Don't go shopping hungry!  No matter where you shop, even if you're the thriftiest of shoppers, this is a cardinal rule!  You know why!
