Wallet Wise Thursdays - 3/5/09

Continuing series on navigating the economy, to your benefit. Segments include eating free in the Bay Area, road trips for under $20, and shopping bargains around the Bay.

  "FILM NOIR" DAYTRIP
This is a great under $20 daytrip that takes you on a wonderful countryside drive between Livermore and Niles, in the east bay.  It's one part movie and one part "pinot noir!"  And it's a daytrip that can only be done on a Saturday…that's the only night of the week where you can catch some great silent movies in the historic town Charlie Chaplin helped put on the map!

Lake Del Valle:
After a responsible visit to a winery or two, head south along Del Valle Road, until you reach the beautiful Lake Del Valle, a few miles south of town.  Take a stroll around the lake trails and maybe enjoy a picnic that you packed!  This East Bay Regional Park District beauty, is a real gem for those of you from other parts of the Bay Area.

Sunol Regional Wilderness:
From Livermore, head west along Vallecitos Road (Highway 84) to Highway 680 South.  Tale the first exit and head south on Calaveras Road, until you reach Geary Road on the left.

Here at the Sunol Regional Wildreness, you can lace up the hiking boots, or take a simple stroll through the spring wildflowers that grace the open meadows of the area.  There's some great eye candy to be had.  The creeks and bridges here make you feel a world away!

Head to Sunol!

From the Sunol Regional Wilderness, head north on Calaveras Road, crossing under the 680 freeway, as it becomes Niles Blvd/Paloma Road.  Follow the signs to central Sunol and feel free take a foot trek through this few block long old train town.  If you're up for it, there's another free wine tasting at Elliston Vineyards, housed in a charming old mansion.

From your last stop in Sunol, head west on Nile Canyon Road (Highway 84) for seven miles.  Turn left at Sullivan Upas and an immediate left onto Niles Blvd.  The Niles Essenay Silent Film Museum is immediately on your right.
