Tossing compostables in the trash could cost you cash in San Francisco.
Mayor Gavin Newsom signed a new rule on Tuesday mandating that residents separate trash, recyclables and compost or face fines.
The ordinance is believed to be the strictest such regulation in the nation, and would go into effect in the fall.
Officials said they'll give residents time to adjust to the new rules but could eventually start levying fines of $100 on rubbish recidivists.
Compost includes everything from food scraps to garden clippings.
